In short: A toaster is only suitable for toasting bread and warming up small snacks. A toaster oven does that too, but also bakes cakes, pizza, meat and vegetables up to 250 °C in a capacity of 25 to 60 litres. Anyone who does more than toast bread is better off with a toaster oven.
The question toaster oven vs toaster comes up in every small kitchen: student room, tiny house, holiday apartment or a countertop with limited space. Both appliances are compact and affordable, but they do fundamentally different things. In this article we explain where the difference lies, which appliance suits which use case and when a toaster simply is not enough.
What does a toaster do — and what doesn't it do?
A toaster works with narrow heating elements that radiate directly onto the bread. The result is fast: in two to three minutes you have a crispy slice. But that is also where it ends. A toaster has no thermostat, no timer for longer cooking times and no room for a baking dish.
Can you warm a croissant in it? Sometimes, via a small tray on the side. A chicken thigh, a 30 cm pizza or a cake? That is simply not possible. A toaster is a mono-functional appliance — excellent at what it does, but limited to exactly that.
What can a toaster oven do that a toaster cannot?
A toaster oven has a real oven cavity with an adjustable temperature (typically 100–250 °C), a heating element on top and bottom, and a fan on convection models. With it you can bake, roast, grill, reheat and even slow-cook.
Concrete advantages over a toaster:
- You bake a pizza, lasagne or brownies in a real baking dish.
- You roast vegetables or chicken wings on the rack.
- You reheat leftovers without drying them out.
- You use it as a fully functional second oven alongside a hob.
A toaster oven can also toast bread — simply place a slice on the rack under the grill. The reverse does not work: a toaster can never replace a toaster oven.

When should you choose a toaster?
A toaster wins on two fronts: speed and counter space. If you exclusively toast two slices every morning and never bake anything, a toaster is cheaper and takes up less room. It is also ready faster: no preheating, no temperature setting.
But as soon as you occasionally want to make a baked dish, pizza or cake, you end up paying for a toaster that cannot do enough. A compact toaster oven from 25 litres also fits on a small countertop and is functionally far more versatile.

How many litres do you need if you replace a toaster with a toaster oven?
If you are simply switching from a toaster and do not prepare large family meals, a 25-litre toaster oven is already more than enough. It fits on almost any countertop (465 mm wide) and bakes a small pizza, a single-serving baked dish or a tray of cookies.
If you regularly cook for two people or also want to grill a whole chicken, 35 or 45 litres is more realistic. If you also have a rotisserie in mind, the 60-litre model is the only option within the bakeVIA range.
How does energy consumption compare to a toaster?
An average toaster uses 900–1200 watts but runs for only two to three minutes. A toaster oven has a higher wattage (1334–2034 watts depending on the model) but prepares dishes you would otherwise make in a full-size oven — which quickly draws 2500–3500 watts and takes much longer to reach temperature.
For toasting bread alone, a toaster uses less energy per cycle. For anything that cooks longer than five minutes, a toaster oven is more efficient than a full-size oven. The two appliances therefore actually compete in different use cases.
Which appliance suits your situation?
Use this as a quick decision framework:
- Breakfast only, no baking → toaster is enough.
- Occasional pizza, cake or baked dish → toaster oven 25–35 L.
- Daily cooking for 1–2 people → toaster oven 35–45 L.
- No full-size oven at home and want to do everything → toaster oven 45–60 L.
A toaster is not an investment in cooking comfort — it is a breakfast appliance. A toaster oven is a genuine compact oven that also handles toasting. The overlap is small; the advantages of the toaster oven are greater for anyone who does more than just toast bread.
