Clean oven glass door: start here for a streak-free result
The fastest way to clean an oven glass door is with a combination of warm water, a drop of dish soap and a microfibre cloth. Always wipe in one direction — never in circles — and dry the glass immediately after cleaning to prevent streaks.
Grease and steam cling to the glass with every use. The longer you wait, the more stubborn the residue becomes. Ideally, clean the glass door every five to ten uses, or as soon as you notice a greasy film.
What do you need?
- Warm water
- Dish soap or all-purpose cleaner (no abrasives)
- White vinegar or glass cleaner (for the finishing touch)
- Two microfibre cloths (one for cleaning, one for drying)
- A soft sponge or soft brush for stubborn grease
Avoid steel wool, abrasive sponges and harsh oven cleaners on the glass panel. They scratch the glass and make streaks worse.
The 5 steps to a streak-free oven glass door
- Let the oven cool down. Never clean the glass door straight after use. Wait at least 20 minutes until the glass is cold — cleaning products evaporate instantly on hot glass and leave a white haze.
- Remove loose residue. Wipe away crumbs and loose grease particles with a dry cloth or soft brush so you don't spread them across the glass.
- Clean with warm soapy water. Dip a microfibre cloth in warm water with a drop of dish soap. Wipe the glass in straight, horizontal strokes — from top to bottom. For stubborn grease spots: lay a warm, damp cloth over the area for 5 minutes, then gently rub the residue away.
- Polish with vinegar or glass cleaner. Spray a small amount of white vinegar (or glass cleaner) onto a clean microfibre cloth — never directly onto the glass. Wipe again horizontally. The vinegar dissolves soap residue, which is the main cause of streaks.
- Dry immediately and thoroughly. Use a second, dry microfibre cloth and wipe the glass dry straight away — including the edges. Do not leave the glass to air dry: water droplets leave behind limescale marks.
How do you remove burnt-on grease from the oven glass door?
Burnt-on grease on the oven glass door is easiest to remove with a paste made from bicarbonate of soda and water. Mix two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with enough water to form a thick paste, apply it gently to the greasy spot and leave it to work for 15 to 20 minutes. Scrub it off with a soft sponge, then wipe down with a damp cloth. Finish with the vinegar step from step 4 for a streak-free result.
Use this method only on the outside of the glass, unless the door of your model can be removed. Consult the manual of your bakeVIA mini oven before dismantling the door.
Why does my oven glass door always get streaks?
Streaks on the glass are almost always caused by one of three things: too much cleaning product, not drying immediately, or wiping in circles. Soap residue and limescale particles from tap water are the biggest culprits. If you live in a hard water area, use distilled water or a little extra vinegar for the finishing touch in step 4.
Cleaning the inside of the glass door
The inside of the door is exposed to splashes and steam. Clean it in the same way as the outside, but take extra care around the rubber seals surrounding the glass. Use a cotton bud dampened with a little vinegar water to clean the seams without damaging the rubber.
Do you have a bakeVIA mini oven with an enamelled interior? The inner walls themselves are easy to wipe clean. The glass door always needs a separate approach, as enamel cleaning methods are too harsh for glass.
How often should you clean the oven glass door?
A quick five-minute wipe after each use prevents grease from burning on. A thorough clean as described above is sufficient every two to four weeks, depending on how intensively you use the oven. Those who regularly cook meat or fatty dishes will benefit from a weekly maintenance clean.
